On the heels of North Carolina’s run to the national championship, coach Hubert Davis has signed a contract extension tying him to the program through the 2027-28 season. The extension, signed on Aug. 22, also includes significant raises for Davis, following his successful first season leading the Tar Heels.

Davis, 52, will earn roughly $16.7 million over the term of the deal, including about $2.4 million this season. That includes his base salary of $400,000 annually, as well as supplemental income. North Carolina has an existing apparel contract with Nike, which will pay Davis about $250,000 a year, and a multimedia rights agreement with Learfield Communications, which will pay Davis another $500,000 per year.
He is also eligible for roughly $1.1 million in annual bonuses, which are tied to team success, individual coaching accolades and continued academic success. This contract replaces Davis’ initial deal worth roughly $10 million — the one he signed last spring following his promotion to head coach in the wake of Roy Williams’ retirement. The deal also provides Davis an annual expense allowance.
Davis made about $1.8 million last season, but due to the Tar Heels’ success during the NCAA Tournament, he also earned another $575,000 in bonuses.
UNC will begin the 2022-23 season as the No. 1 team in the country after returning four starters from last year’s squad that lost 72-69 to Kansas in the NCAA championship game.
