PGA Tour and Champions Tour player Thomas Daniel Weiskopf (born November 9, 1942) is an American professional golfer who has competed on the PGA and Champions Tours. His most successful decade was the 1970s, during which time he won 16 PGA Tour championships between 1968 and 1982, making him the most successful golfer in history. Following the conclusion of his tournament career, Weiskopf has established himself as a renowned golf course design. Weiskopf was born in the Ohio town of Massillon. The Ohio State University graduate attended Benedictine High School in Cleveland and then played golf for the Buckeyes. In 1964, he made the transition to the professional world. Weiskopf’s first PGA Tour victory came at the Andy Williams-San Diego Open Invitational in 1968, and he went on to win a further fifteen tournaments until retiring in 1982.
His best season came in 1973, when he won seven events across the globe, including The Open Championship at Royal Troon, and he finished the year ranked second in the world according to Mark McCormack’s global golf rankings, which were published in the United Kingdom. The 1976 U.S. Open would be his lone major tournament win, although he had four other runner-up finishes at The Masters and a T2 result at the PGA Championship the year before. Weiskopf won the Canadian Open twice, the second time in dramatic fashion, with a one-hole playoff victory over archrival Jack Nicklaus on the Royal Montreal Golf Club’s Blue Course on the 15th hole. The third time, Weiskopf won the Canadian Open on the 18th hole at the Royal Montreal Golf Club’s Red Course.
Weiskopf was a member of the United States Ryder Cup teams in 1973 and 1975, and he won both times. Although he was also eligible for the 1977 squad, he chose to forego the tournament in order to go big-game hunting instead. Weiskopf’s golf stroke was well regarded across the golfing community. Weiskopf’s outbursts on the golf course earned him the moniker “The Towering Inferno” because of his ability to smash the ball high, create tremendous force, and maintain excellent control at the same time.
Weiskopf began competing on the Senior PGA Tour in 1993 and has since won a number of events, including one major championship, the 1995 U.S. Senior Open. Weiskopf began his career in golf course design by working with Jay Morrish, but he now has his own successful practise. Among his numerous courses are the Monument and Pinnacle courses at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Loch Lomond, which served as the site of the Scottish Open from 1995 to 2010. He has designed at least 40 courses in various locations throughout the globe. Many of the courses have gotten a great deal of positive feedback. He has also served as a golf commentator for CBS Sports, covering the Masters from 1981 through 1995, as well as the PGA Championship. The Open Championship has been covered by ABC Sports and ESPN since 2008, and he has contributed to their coverage since 2008.
