IT ONLY took three weeks to sell but a Toorak mansion has sold for eight figures setting a new price record for Melbourne.
Before this week’s mega sale, the Victorian capital’s existing house price record was sitting at $24 million with the sale of a grand five-bedroom Georgian-style residence at 39 Georges St, Toorak in 2010. That mammoth mansion was rumoured to have set property magnate Harry Stamoulis back as much as $70 million to build.
It has been confirmed the new record holder, a glamorous seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom home at 4 Robertson St, Toorak has fetched “more than” $24 million.
Although selling agent Marcus Chiminello confirmed the Toorak trophy home was no longer on the market, he would not disclose an exact price. He did however tell the Herald Sun that the sale had surpassed the previous Melbourne price record.
Mr Chiminello told news.com.au at the time of listing that he was “confidently” expecting the palatial pad to smash not only the Melbourne price record, but the highest price paid for a home in Victoria. It is unclear whether the “more than $24 million” achieved for the Robertson St sale surpassed the $26 million paid for a waterfront property in Portsea back in 2010.
Prominent Melbourne business couple, Tony and Jennifer Smorgon purchased the Toorak home in 2005 for $4.52 million according CoreLogic records and then constructed the existing mansion on the 1767sq m site.
As well as furnishings by Thomas Hamel Interiors and outdoor landscaping by Paul Bangay, the property also features marble terraces, a grand entry hall, a sweeping staircase, movie theatre, nanny’s quarters, a dance studio, art studio, library, 25m pool and a five-car underground garage.
